To get anything done, no matter the budget, money is a necessary evil. In the absence of a trust fund, generous and rich family/friends, a sugar daddy or lottery win, crowdfunding is the best way to get money to make your project.
(There are other options for self funding; credit cards, line of credit, personal loans, all which are higher risk than investors.)
I'm no different than any other indie film maker, so I started a crowdfunding campaign. I started a campaign on Fundrazr, which seems to be the best option with the most visibility and options where you get to keep most of the money.
It's in the early stages, but I did create a video to help create buzz. The best kind of campaigns have a trailer or statement video; a statement video is usually the director/writer/producer talking about the project and asking people to contribute. A trailer is usually something that shows what the project is about, a small snippet of the script.
For a short film, it's a little more difficult to create a trailer, especially since you need the money to make anything. I avoided the statement video as a talking head isn't the most interesting video to watch. The pros are that it gives a clear picture of what the project is about. Cons are that it's just a talking head and isn't very exciting.
I chose to make a trailer type video, but in the absence of any live footage I created what I called a teaser that alludes to the type of film it is.
In it's early iterations, it makes a statement, but in the interests of clarity, it will be tweaked to include more project information. It will be a blend of statement and teaser.
